Mahagonny Songspiel

Under the baton of Timothy Weiss, DCWS reunites with the Detroit Opera Resident Artists for a performance of Kurt Weill’s Mahagonny Songspiel and Maurice Ravel’s Hebrew Songs.

Please join us at 2:30 p.m. for A Hundred Years from Mahagonny, a pre-concert talk by U-M Clinical Professor of Music Caroline Helton.
With the Mahagonny Songspiel, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht began their collaboration centering social commentary in their art. Professor Helton’s pre-concert talk will examine the musical and historical context of the original composition and explore the prescient themes that resonate from Weimar Germany to our present day in the U.S.
